Robert Anthony “Bob” A. Ficano, a professor at Wayne County Community College District and a former Wayne County Executive and Sheriff. He earned his BA from Michigan State University in 1974 and a JD from the University of Detroit in 1977.
Ficano began his legal career as an attorney and assistant city attorney for Westland, Michigan, before being appointed Wayne County Sheriff in 1983, a position he held through multiple re-elections. In 2003, he became County Executive, overseeing one of the most populous counties in the U.S., with 1.8 million residents.
Ficano is known for his strong ties to organized labor, particularly the UAW, and his controversial veto of a 2004 ordinance that aimed to ban smoking in workplaces.
